After concentrating on the motorcar industry, the success of four-wheel drive vehicles in early military tests prompted the company to switch its attention to trucks — successfully helping to supply demand for both US and allied armed in both world wars. Both vehicles were shipped in good quantities overseas as part of the lend-lease agreement between the allied armies during the conflict. Despite a good number of vehicles coming over, the sight of one some 70 years after being first ordered is somewhat rare. These vehicles are certainly very rare with their believed to be just one other HAR left in the UK. Not long after WWII, a number of MOD surplus sales took place with many vehicles such as these FWDs being placed in grand auctions with the vehicles and other mechanical instruments no longer needed by the armed forces, and this is where Roger would first stumble across the FWDs. This particular sale took place not far from where the vehicles now reside being held at Benther Wood, Winterslow on Salisbury Plain. There were all sorts to choose from as a good lot had been towed in and they were all in different states of repair. We brought a number of different machines from the sale including a DUKW!

Below – My TV debate with Cardiff Freemason Jim Bevan – – – – Freemasonry and Witchcraft initiation rites compared “The great strength of our Order lies in its concealment; let it never appear in any place in its own name, but always covered by another name, and another occupation. None is better than the three lower degrees of Free Masonry; the public is accustomed to it, expects little from it, and therefore takes little notice of it.
Next to this, the form of a learned or literary society is best suited to our purpose, and had Free Masonry not existed, this cover would have been employed; and it may be much more than a cover, it may be a powerful engine in our hands. By establishing reading societies, and subscription libraries, and taking these under our direction, and supplying them through our labours, we may turn the public mind which way we will.
Books , films and ex-Freemason exposees Without doubt the most useful and accurate information on the Freemasons comes from ex memers of ‘the craft’.

Wiltshire – Pubs and Inns with a literary connection Alderbury Charles Dickens Early in ‘Martin Chuzzlewit’, Dickens introduces a little Wiltshire village within easy journey of the fair old town of Salisbury. It lies a short a distance off the main coaching road to London and has a snug alehouse, which he calls the Blue Dragon where much of the action takes place. Nearby is a church with a tapering spire, a forge, a sparkling stream and a three storey house where the architect Mr Pecksniff lives Two Wiltshire pubs claim to be the original for the Blue Dragon, this one and the George at Amesbury, but the latter has little evidence to support its claim.
To complicate matters, Dickensian scholar Robert Allbut – working on the coach-route clue – has suggested a third possibility; the Red Lion at Winterslow. He suggests All Saints as the church where Tom Pinch played the organ, and that Clarendon Park, between Winterslow and Salisbury then less a park than a wood was the scene of Jonas Chuzzlewit’s murder of Montague Tigg The charming 15th-century Green Dragon is generally accepted as Dickens’s model and it does have a lot going for it.
Dickens’s pub had an unusually large upstairs room for a village alehouse which required a couple of steps down to enter. Look at the photograph and you will see the floor level of the big gable end room is slightly lower. There is also an adjacent forge which is still working today On the down side, Alderbury is not enroute to London. It lies South East of Salisbury and is directly on the old coaching road to Southampton. The village sits on a hill with views to the Cathedral spire.
There is a stream but it is down in the valley and the church is half-a-mile mile away. Beckhampton Charles Dickens The A4 was once the main road linking Bristol and London and the journey by horseback or stagecoach would take two days, crossing the coldest stretch the Marlborough Downs at Beckhampton – at around the halfway point.
