Speed Dating Buddhism By Tom Webster Leave a Comment After 25 years of meditation practice and related study of Buddhism including three years in an advanced practice group , I had an epiphany recently that there are just a few salient principles that are the most important to study. This summary is simply my point-of-view interpretations based on practice and study, an ongoing work in progress, an opinion without attachment, as opposed to an opinion based on belief. Benefits of meditation Buddhism today in its Western forms is the foundation of a variety of paths for improving well-being.
There is now a large body of research that attests to the power of this simple practice to affect well-being.
Buddhism (/ ˈ b ʊ d ɪ z əm /, US also / ˈ b uː-/) is the world’s fourth-largest religion with over million followers, or over 7% of the global population, known as Buddhists. An Indian religion, Buddhism encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs and spiritual practices largely based on original teachings attributed to the Buddha and resulting interpreted philosophies.
This complex history, with its many cultural influences, formed the foundation for a region where Buddhism and Buddhist art would flourish and develop unique characteristics. This exhibition explores the primary characteristics that make works from Gandhara of such profound cultural significance, featuring stone sculptures and reliefs, bronzes, and works in gold dating from the first century BCE to the fifth century CE—from the Indo-Greek through Kushan periods, and closing with the beginnings of Sasanian rule there.
The Buddhist Heritage of Pakistan is the first exhibition to bring works of Gandharan art from Pakistan to the United States in more than fifty years. Art from Gandhara is notable for its striking stylistic qualities, many of which reflect complex connections to Greco-Roman and Parthian art. The region was a crossroads where the early influences of the western classical world met with Indian imagery and local practices.
At the same time, Gandhara is also important for the unique forms of Buddhist imagery that emerged there. These include an array of relief scenes from the life of the Buddha, images of multiple buddhas, and sculptures of bodhisattvas. The legacy of Gandharan Buddhism and its remarkable art can still be detected throughout Asia. Although its heartland was located in present-day Pakistan, Gandharan culture spread through Central Asia and reached the Tarim Basin.
Many ideas and images that developed in Gandhara eventually traveled to China, and from there to Korea and Japan.

His family was noted for its erudition for generations, and Xuanzang was the youngest of four children. According to traditional biographies, Xuanzang displayed a superb intelligence and earnestness, amazing his father by his careful observance of the Confucian rituals at the age of eight. Along with his brothers and sister, he received an early education from his father, who instructed him in classical works on filial piety and several other canonical treatises of orthodox Confucianism.

First and foremost, this project is a labor of love. Second, it is a tribute to Kamakura, my home for the past 20 years, and home to dozens of temples from the Kamakura Era , which still house and display wondrous life-size wooden statues from the 8th century onward. Third, this project was prompted by a dissatisfaction with the online sites of the great repositories of Japanese Buddhist sculpture — the national museums in Tokyo , Kyoto , and Nara.
There is no comprehensive online catalog.
(The name is written bōzu bā, a play on words pairing a common term for a Buddhist priest with the Japanese transliteration of the English word “bar”.) I have no way of knowing how the dating couple actually received the bartender’s sermon.

The architecture The Sanchi stupa captures the journey to enlightenment Architectural drawing of Sanchi Stupa The Sanchi Stupa is more than a reliquary preserving the remains of Buddhist teachers and Buddhism. It shows the journey to enlightenment. Traditionally, stupas do hold relics of Buddha or influential Buddhist monks. But at the same time, these structures also explain how Buddha achieved enlightenment, freeing himself from the cycle of life and death.
The Stupa consists of a base bearing a hemispherical dome anda , symbolizing the dome of heaven enclosing the earth. It is surmounted by a squared rail unit harmika representing the world mountain, from which rises a mast yashti , symbolizing the cosmic axis.

That this should come from an organisation that has done so much good, and from an individual who has done so much good, is very sad. Sogyal Rinpoche had first started visiting Australia in the mid s, nearly a decade before his book was to become a spiritual classic. Regarded as a master of the great Tibetan oral traditions, Rinpoche’s book had managed to lay out in simple, eloquent terms various Buddhist concepts on impermanence, karma, rebirth, compassion for the dying, and the benefits of training the mind through meditation.
In so doing, he slaked a spiritual thirst and inspired millions.
