He would then step from behind the screen, they would embrace, and then jet off on a chaperoned adventure paid for by the producers. Over the course of its two-decade run, the format underwent several alterations but still speaks to the notion that sometimes Cupid needs a little outside intervention. Have you ever been on a date? Upon returning from our holiday break, Jennifer Lund and I had a request from one of our Language Arts teachers to schedule her classes for the popular book tasting activity. We faced two challenges: While this version of book tasting does not have the degree of choice as the other interpretations of the activity, we felt this version would hopefully expose students to different authors and types of books they might not normally choose.
The review form, as you can see below, gave us the flexibility to do up to four rounds of the activity within a period depending on the time learners needed to interact with each book; we made our copies on bright yellow paper. Please feel free to download and modify this document:

Colby Sharp My fourth graders are spending some time these last few weeks of school building their to-read lists. I have heard about book speed dating from multiple people on Twitter the last two years. As long as kids are getting the opportunity to preview and talk about lots of different titles, book speed dating serves its purpose. I place a giant stack of books at each table group. When selecting books for book speed dating I try to find titles that: Are in a series that not many students know about New titles Books that I am surprised not many students have found during the year Favorite authors that my kids are not reading Blume, Dahl, Cleary, etc.
Lots and lots of nonfiction Old favorites-books that kids loved at the start of the year Old read alouds-I love including the books that my students teachers read aloud to them in third grade 2. My class were studying a topic on the organisation of sport in the UK and were struggling to get to grips with all of the various organisational bodies and their roles. I therefore decided to have an interim revision session with a difference and used speed dating as the vehicle for this. I created seven questions based on what they had already learnt. As each student came into the class, they were given one question each.
They were asked to sit at a table with others who had the same question. There are 24 in the group so roughly 3 students per question. After the 5 minutes were up, the speed dating began. Each student had to move around the room and meet with another student but not one who also had the same question as them. They then had 2 minutes in which to state their question and give the answer which was then reciprocated by their partner. In total they had 6 speed dates so each of the other questions was covered.
They were not allowed to take any notes with them — everything had to be done from memory, including retaining the new information given to them during their speed dates. When the speed dating was finished, the 7 questions were all put up on the board.

Lower levels are very literal and need time to prep, but my upper levels get a shorter prep time and often use alter-egos instead of their true personality. It makes it hysterical. I set up the room with long tables with girls on one side and boys on the other so they are facing each other. For example, if you have 18 guys and 12 girls, you will need 3 guys to be on the girl side. Here is the super basic form that I used with Spanish I to plan their answers and questions.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students.
Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc. They really enjoyed this lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.

Not only will it get you moving but people will notice you and be curious about you. It will make speaking to women much easier afterwards. Do this without any ulterior motive to pick up a woman — just do it to be sociable and to be generous.
Jul 08, · Speed Dating in the Classroom Posted on July 8, June 27, by CatherineMcGuinness Posted in Social Studies Tagged New Learning Standards Guest blog by Mrs. Linda Salinas, AP European History and US History teacher at Harlingen High School .
Across the country and throughout our great state, classrooms are transforming in an effort to engage students in meaningful learning. Teachers are revamping their teaching styles and lessons to reach students in a way that is fun and memorable. As a secondary social studies teacher, I had to become extra creative in order to find ways to make learning historical content and skills fun and exciting.
I knew lectures and workbooks would keep the learner in a sedated state. So how could I bring learning to life and get students to learn without even realizing it? In this blog, I will share out my speed dating activity and how I used in my 11th grade social studies classroom. Speed Dating The great thing about this activity is that it allows your students to explore a large amount of content in a 45 or minute class period and can be used in any subject area.
Students work individually, in pairs, and then collaboratively. Initially, I thought I was a genius but after researching, I realized it was not some new, unheard of idea. I introduced this activity in my Progressive Era unit. To better understand how it works, here is my breakdown for the period. This is explained with 24 students, and 12 different people being showcased. This leads to a discussion by groups and then as a whole class to introduce the lesson.
In the graphic below, these students shared the same letter.
